Exploring the Barbados Countryside
If you are planning to go to Barbados for the first time, whether personal or business travel, it is likely that you want to know about the different means of transportation available in the country. Knowing the different options for land travel around the country is important if you want to maximise your stay and save more time.
Barbados actually offers broad choices for you. There are taxis around the country, both those that run on meters and those that have flat rates. You may find it more comfortable riding on it as you hop from one tourist destination to another, or from one shopping centre to another.
The country also offers public buses and mini buses. Public buses are very common and operate seven days a week. Big buses are mostly government-owned, but they offer the same rates as with other companies. One thing to remember though is that this kind of vehicles tend not to give change for your fare. You might consider preparing the exact amount when you take a ride.
Among the most common and plentiful are private-own mini-vans that travel to many points in the island. You can easily notice these vehicles because they usually are painted prominently and often play musical horns and turned-up music. They are usually painted with numbers across the body to indicate their routes. You may ask some locals the route number of your destination for you to hire the right van. One thing to keep in mind is that their routes usually lead to common tourist destinations in the country.
If you are staying in a hotel that provides shuttle service, you can avail of it for you to go to scenic places around the island. However, if you prefer to drive along the countryside by yourself, you can rent a car from several rental companies, particularly in Bridgetown. As a foreign tourist, you are required to have an international driver's license and a temporary local license. Another thing to remember is that driving is on the left side of the road and the traffic flow is clockwise.
Whatever your choice of transportation is, the important thing here is that you are enjoying your stay so that by the time you leave, you are taking a part of the country and the experience along with you.
